Piemonte
Chardonnay, in Piedmont, is not, as many believe, a modern introduction. Its presence is attested starting from the first half of the nineteenth century thanks to the resourcefulness of Filippo Asinari, Count of San Marzano and Costigliole and an important political-military figure.
Upon his return from France, where he had collaborated alongside Napoleon, he brought with him some Chardonnay cuttings from the famous Montrachet vineyard to plant them in Costigliole. Their presence in the area still persists because the composition of our soil and the microclimate congenial to them have allowed them to take root.
